Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
