Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Spot.

At first glance, this album might appear more like a challenging academic challenge rather than a new popular music album by an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided across 4 different movements and performed in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystery, religious ascent, and bodily change, frequently by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched upwards on this record, supported by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of other artists appear quite modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first album to blend the past with the present, its ambitions feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What really elevates her fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless want to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly during a stunning piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never exactly understand—nor want to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly each song concludes in a completely distinct place than where it started. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins out dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in English builds on a chorus that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spins skyward. This feat is echoed by a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some major pop albums of the year felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
