Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid discussing classified information in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Background

The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
