Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
