Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
